Congressman Ryan portrayed the current condition of the U.S. food industry exceptionally well and that makes this book very relevant to all Americans. Sadly, while recognizing the negative affect of having big business controlling U.S. Congressional policy/laws and admitting congress is not representing the American people as indicated by their 9 percent approval rating, he continues to advocate government solutions. He appeared incapable of contemplating an approach more like New Zealand’s ban on agricultural subsidies (1984), which resulted in massive renewal and expansion of their farming sector. The below was published in 2014 by William Miao and is an excellent indication of the state of NZ’s agricultural sector: Today the agricultural sector is New Zealand’s export lifeblood, dominated by family farms and experiencing constant, enviable growth. Milk and wool are the country’s biggest exports, and there are more livestock in the country than people. Despite evidence that a new era of intensification is underway in the country – and though the applicability of its policies might not be relevant for larger, subsidy-dependent countries like the United States – the case of New Zealand shows that aggressively dismantling subsidies may not be as disastrous as is conventionally believed.Congressman Ryan also indicated that the bottom 80 percent of our farmers get little to nothing from subsidies. How then is this policy not applicable to the U.S.?Tim Ryan has written an inspirational book leading us to back to our small and medium sized farms to supply our country with sustainable healthy food. The toll that much of our current food supply is taking on our health is dramatic with an epidemic of food related diseases including obesity, diabetes, heart disease and cancer. He brings an awareness that our current food supply is out of balance with fruits and vegetables suffering from a lack of support and advertising. He is encouraging a grass roots movement to sway the current policies and practices toward foods that will maintain our health and not lead to increasing costs for health care that is the result of our present unhealthy diet. It would be tremendous if we could have celebrities such as Lebron James who is now an Ohio resident in Tim's state, support a healthy diet through advertising rather than promoting the fast food industry which is sending our children the wrong message. As a cardiologist, so much of the suffering and disease that I see is preventable and our diet is a significant contributor to our unwellness. Michael Rocha, MDThis book is great! It gives some great information and things people can do eat healthier, but not in a preachy sort of way. Facts are given that support what the author is trying to say. I feel like this author is a regular kind of guy who struggles just like the rest of us and through educating himself he realized how bad we as Americans eat and why. It is great information and I have learned a lot and will make changes in food choices for me and my family. This is a great book to motivate to eat whole foods and see what is going on in our food supply in the world. Eat the meat, dairy, and eggs to a very small minimum or better eliminate from your diet, you will live longer. My husband would be dead today and I was going down the road of being nearly dead. We have turned our health around by just eating whole foods of vegetables and fruits. He's got it covered, wish all our elected government officials were this tuned in. Interesting listen or read. I got the CDs and listen when I'm in the kitchen preparing my organic and healthy meals. I've been telling all my friends to invest in at least the ebook which is available at this post for 99cents.Every person should know about their foods, where it comes from, and who grows it. Small farmers have to compete with monopolies like Monsanto and Cargill. If more people took an interest in their food, there would be less disease in this country. I strongly recommend this book.Haven't finished it yet
